Alumni News: Phis from the ’40s to the early 2000s share life updates

Since we officially started up our alumni relations program and communications again last summer, we’ve asked you men for your life updates several times and gotten an INCREDIBLE response over the past few months. Thanks to those of you who submitted your updates; you’ll see that we have news from Phi Delts who graduated in the 1940s through the early 2000s.

To submit your own alumni news, visit the Submit an Update page or email us at alumninews@pathetapsu.org. Read on to see where your brothers’ lives have taken them since they graduated from Penn State.

Arthur Miller ’47
“Enjoying life at Shannondell, a retirement community in Audubon, PA. Sorry to lose Ray Fortunato ’47, pianist extraordinaire, last year. Took in our last Penn State football game two years ago.”

George Harrison ’58
“My wife, Kit and I are retired nature journalists who travelled the world together, in 50 countries on six continents, to write about and photograph wildlife for National Wildlife, Sports Afield, Birds & Blooms, Audubon, Sports Illustrated, and others. We produced 6 PBS Specials on backyard wildlife, authored 14 books, and led photo safaris to East Africa and the Galapagos. I have just finished a three-volume memoir with thousands of photographs and 700 pages of adventures.”

Harry L. Allen Jr. ’63
“I attended Wharton Graduate School after Penn State and sometimes compare it to Dear Old State: I remember the people and traditions of PSU; the class work and professors from Wharton! My life has been dominated by my business I started in 1973, Great Lakes Power (www.glpower.com) and my family of 3 boys and one girl who have all joined the team and given us 14 grandchildren to love and spoil. None of this was possible without meeting a Southern Indiana girl at a New Year’s Eve party in Louisville while working at Cummins Engine Company. She was a Phys Ed major at Ball State and could do no hand flips. Married 11 months later. Our life and home revolve around Lake Erie in North Perry, Ohio; the sanctuary for our family.”

Dave Barton ’65
“Worked 33 years for Mobil Oil mostly in product development research. Retired at 56, moved to FL; just moved to sr. progressive care facility in Cape Coral, FL, and love it. Two sons, 51 and 48; one bachelor in No VA and one married with 2 daughters in Wilmington, DE.”

Jack Fulmer ’65
“Captain US Marine Corps – 45 years in the IT field, retired Naples, FL – on several Board of Directors.”

Perry Elliot ’66
“What’s new??! Pacemaker, hearing aids, new right knee, Rheumatoid Arthritis; but nothing is slowing me down!!”

Regis Cleary ’69
“Retired last year (BTW, highly recommend retirement). My wife and I decided to relocate near our grand kids. Now living just north of Niagara Falls on the shore of Lake Ontario, which is now my backyard. Get to kayak on the lake. We live in wine country. Stop by when you’re in the area and we can give you a tour.”

Robert Reese ’73
“I have lived in the State College area since 1976. I retired from Penn State University on December 30th, 2011 after 35 years of service. Over the last several years Larry Unger ’72Tom Kapenstein, and I have reconnected, and we get together during deer season at Larry’s hunting camp. I am not sure how many deer are harvested but the beverages, reminiscing, and laughs make it a great time. My daughter works for UK in Lexington, Kentucky. She teaches at UK and works with cancer research. My son is a Captain in the Marine Corps reserve, my daughter-in-law is a Phys Ed teacher and they have 2 children, a girl and a boy. My wife and I are both retired. Add they live in Summerville, SC.”

William Kuzmich ’73
“Lived in Sugar Land, TX outside of Houston for 35 years. Move to Prescott, AZ about five years ago. Am now retired. Travelled the world (20 + countries and all over the US) doing business and information technology consulting mostly in the energy business for over 40 years. Married with 3 daughters and 5 grandchildren.”

Peter Costello ’76
“Retired playing golf and tennis.”

Tim Young ’76
“Retired now after a 40+ year career in corporate America in HR roles. Moved too many times if you listen to my PSU Theta wife, but lifelong friends developed at each stop. Living in Cincinnati (ugh, Buckeye country) and enjoying a little consulting work and a lot of whatever I want to do. Three good kids, all out on their own (yeah!) with one grandbaby. Hilary (we met in the Phi Delt basement party room) and I are still having fun.”

Kris Zwycewicz ’89
“My wife, Susan Faulkner, who I met 18 months before graduation, was introduced to me by her brother and my Phi Delt big brother and current brother-in-law, Paul Faulkner ’87. We celecrated our 30th Wedding Anniversary at the end of this September. Susan is winding her career down to a 2-3 days a week schedule while I am just to work on a plan to achieve a part-time exit strategy from my company. My Construction firm Ryzec Building Group will hit $25 million in 2020 for the first time since founding the Commerical Contracting Company in 2007. My partner and I never desired nor anticipated exceeding $10MM in revenue. However, after successfully building the company slowly through an 8-year recession and then coming out of a rapid rebound in 2017 in Nashville, TN and most of the Southeast US where we operate, we were ready to expand and grow much more rapidly than we ever planned. My oldest son has followed in my footsteps and has become a civil engineer and is now in the Construction Development and Building Business. He had worked for me for many years while in HS and College which makes a father proud. I hope to have him join my firm over the next few years and eventually take over managing the day-to-day operations.”

Martin Duff ’98
“Just moved back to the US from Hong Kong. Living in Denver, CO. Married 18 years to my college girlfriend, 3 kids, work at VF Corporation as a Supply Chain Exec.”

John Bushko ’99
“Currently living in Phoenix, AZ with my 3 children and wife (19 years married) and 2 dogs. I am a Director of Supply Chain.”

Garrett Spangler ’02
“Things have been similar for a while, but enjoying my kids growing up (they are 9 and 12), continuing to progress in my career as an attorney, and still getting together with numerous Phis from my era (late ’90s – early 2000s) a couple times each year.”

Phil Caraballo-Garrison ’04
“My family and I relocated back to northeast Pennsylvania five years ago, and I still keep in touch with and see many of our brothers (including some recent Zoom happy hours). Hopefully, we can have an alumni event for a football game in 2021.”
