PA Theta’s Favorite Happy Valley Haunts and Hangouts

We asked PA Theta alums what their favorite spots around Happy Valley were. Here’s what they had to say…

PA Theta's Favorite Happy Valley Haunts and Hangouts 1960

“My favorite places in State College were The Corner Room and The Tavern. They were great places to socialize.” –George Harrison ’58

“Obviously, the Rathskeller and The Corner Room were popular destinations. In the spring we would head to the dam. I spent a lot of time on the football fields and in the open area west of Route 322 and the fraternity house. The Hub and Rec Hall dominated my free time.” –Harry L. Allen Jr. ’63

“The Tavern Restaurant. I went with my high school sweetheart who was a fellow Penn Stater; she’s now my wife. My dad would send me $10 every term to take us to dinner there.” –Dave Barton ’65

“Rathskeller for obvious reasons.” –Jack Fulmer ’65

“Going to the ’Skeller on Wednesday night for a mid-week beer break!” –Perry Elliot ’66

“My favorite place in State College was home. My father moved us there when I was eleven.” –Regis Cleary ’69

“Scorpion to listen to Terry Beard.” –Robert Reese ’73

“Rec Hall on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons in the winter, and any Saturday or Sunday. There were great hoops and racquetball games, and groups of Phis ‘ran’ the basketball courts. Winners stayed, so of course, the Phis held the court until it was time to leave. Friendships cemented on the courts of the main gym and South Halls. It was a great workout before a Saturday jammy.” –Tim Young ’76

“The Allen Street Grill or Zeno’s. There was great food and live music.” –David Moylan ’77

“I loved any opportunity to recharge my batteries and completely forget about campus life and the rigors of the PSU engineering curriculum. I would go four-wheeling in my restored ’67 Jeep CJ through mountain and hunting trails from Bald Eagle State Park to Whipple Dam. This was prior to GPS and cell phones, so this trip sometimes lasted many hours into the night. I ended up sleeping in my soft-top Jeep, lost in the backwoods of Huntingdon and Centre County until daybreak, on two separate occasions. I had the privilege and honor of being a Lion’s Paw member, so my favorite spot on campus was Room 419 in Old Main where I would regularly study and relax. I would go late to walk the halls and take in the view of campus from the fourth-floor corner room dormers. At midnight and later in the a.m., all of campus was quiet except for the bells of Old Main ringing on the quarter-hour. It’s a real special place and being able to freely come and go at that time was one of my campus highlights.” –Kris Zwycewicz ’89

Cafe 210 West, PSU football, Phi Delt House, THON…” –Martin Duff ’98

“My favorite place in State College was the Allen Street Grill, as it was the hangout for the brothers over 21 and other friends. Some of my best memories are of sitting in the corner playing cards and watching the snow come down.” –John Bushko ’99

“My favorite place was the sportscenter/sports cafe, although I know it has since changed hands. It was right down the street from the house, so it was a great location for brothers to get together.” –Garrett Spangler ’02
